Steve Barclay is set to be re-adopted in five days times as the Conservative choice to fight the June 8 election in NE Cambs.

The local Conservative association executive will meet in Whittlesey on Friday and invite members to endorse Mr Barclay, who ironically was originally chosen at a selection meeting in the town in 2008.

If the executive committee approves him, it will be followed by a general meeting of members who are expected to endorse Mr Barclay as their candidate.

Mr Barclay has described the forthcoming General Election as “pivotal”.

He said: “Britain needs a strong and stable leadership that can steer the country through Brexit negotiations and only a General Election can bring this.

“In recent months, Labour, Liberal Democrat and the Scottish National Party have threatened to bring Brexit negotiations to a halt, and this must not be allowed to happen.

“Last June our country entered a historical vote to leave the European Union and only a Conservative vote in the General Election will ensure this happens.”

Mr Barclay outlined what he believes have been some of his achievements including securing Fenland and East Cambridgeshire as one of 12 areas to be chosen nationally as a school opportunity area with an extra £6 million of funding.

He also cites his campaign to secure the future of minor injuries units locally “and to give them a new lease of life through expanding them with additional services as rural care hubs, with the pilots now underway”.

He added: “There remains, however, much still to do and I hope to continue as your Member of Parliament to drive forward this vital work programme.

“This includes delivering the much needed transport improvements our area needs, where I have led the debate with the Local Enterprise Partnership in challenging the pace at which money allocated by Government is being implemented locally.

“I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure we deliver the half hour service at Littleport next year; improve parking at stations; have a late night service from Cambridge and Ely to Fenland; dual sections of the A47 at Eye, and ensure Wisbech to Cambridge Rail is built.”

Mr Barclay said: “Enormous progress has been made on all of these schemes, and I am committed to seeing them through to completion.”
