THE Bishop of Ely, the Rt Revd Stephen Conway, has had surgery for a burst appendix, the Diocese of Ely confirmed this week.

A spokesman for the Diocese said that the bishop was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in an ambulance on Saturday and was operated on the same day.

Since his operation, the bishop is said to be “recovering well” and continues to be monitored by doctors. He is expected to be home by the weekend.

Bishop Stephen was installed as the 69th Bishop of Ely in March 2011, taking over the role from Dr John Russell who stood down after 10 years.

The bishop came to the post from his former position as the Suffragan Bishop of Ramsbruy in the Diocese of Salisbury, a post which he had held since 2006.
