GUESTS attending a coffee and sandwich lunch to celebrate work starting on the expansion of the South Fens Business Park found Fenland District Council leader Alan Melton in ebullient form.
There was momentary shock, however, as he threatened to ‘strip off’ but I’d like to believe it was all done in the best possible taste as he removed his jacket and tie to reveal a T-shirt trumpeting the legend “60 is the new 40”.
The occasion coincided with his 60th birthday and unbeknown to Alan some of the guests had brought along balloons and a cake to celebrate.
He took the following few days off for a short holiday but the hard work begins soon as voters go to the polls in May with Alan’s Conservative party hoping to retain control of the district council.
