MORE than 60 homes look set to be built on a three-and-a-half acre site in Chatteris.

Fenland District Council's planning committee approved the plans for 63 homes, a mix of houses and bungalows, west of London Road and south of Blackmill Road.

It was the second time the planning committee had considered an application for the site. It refused a first application for 65 homes in February amid fears two-storey homes would overlook existing bungalows in Blackmill Road.

But the committee welcomed the revised plans, which have seen those planned houses replaced by bungalows.

Councillor Florence Newell said Persimmon Homes had listened to residents and had met their concerns half way.

The plans were approved despite 13 letters from nearby residents, raising concerns over possible pollution from cars and rubbish, flooding, loss of privacy, over-development and protection of wildlife, such as barn owls and woodpeckers, which live on the site.

The committee also dismissed objections raised by Councillor Ray German, council representative for the Mills ward which covers London Road and Blackmill Road. He said the new homes would "stick out like a sore thumb if you looked towards Chatteris from Warboys", and would not be in keeping with existing homes.
