A Whittlesey-based renewable energy developer has been given the green light to build a pair of new wind turbines after receiving a big funding boost.

The Abbey Group, on Funthams Lane, has secured £16 million from Lombard, the asset finance arm of Natwest, meaning it can build two 1.5Mk turbines.

Once built, the turbines, along with the group’s other turbines, are expected to generate enough electricity to power 7,000 homes.

Nick Sutton, the Abbey Group managing director, said: “We looked at a number of asset finance providers, but Lombard offered a comprehensive and thorough service that allowed us the flexibility to amend our facility to include the additional turbines.

“The team have been extremely proactive in progressing the deal and their expertise in green energy are unsurpassed.”

The two new turbines are expected to be complete by the end of the summer.
