Delays expected on Fenland road on Sunday

THIS weekend will see the arrival of a new supergrid electricity transformer at National Grid’s substation at Walpole St Andrew.

The 137-tonne machine, which is travelling by sea from Europe, will be transported to Walpole on a specially constructed trailer measuring 80 metres long and five metres wide.

Travelling at 4mph, and with a police escort, the transformer will complete the final stage of its journey to the substation in the early hours of Sunday between 8am and 11am.

The last few miles will end a marathon delivery that started in Austria where the transformer was built, then by barge to Rotterdam and on to Sutton Bridge Port.

The final leg brings it along the A17, the A1101 Wisbech Road, then on to the A47 before travelling along Lynn Road (B198) to Walton Highway. It will then turn left on to School Road to West Walton, right on to Mill Road, and then on to Walpole Bank before entering the Walpole substation site.
