SMALL businesses have been warned to beware of identity theft after a Fenland law firm caught rogue traders red-handed.

Tony Cheetham, a partner of Fraser Dawbarns, was in the middle of a transaction when he noticed solicitors acting for the other party were using different addresses for his client on documents.

When Mr Cheetham checked with Companies House, he noticed his client’s registered office had been changed from a location in Wisbech to a flat in a small town on the other side of the country.

Luckily he switched it back but said it might not have been discovered for some time had there been no eagle-eyed watchers to stop it.

Chris Sharman, from Marketlaw consultants, said there are between 50 and 100 cases of identity fraud each month.
