TURNING TO page three in last week’s paper I was confronted with an article for Buttercross bargains, apparently three planned open air auctions that will take place on the town square that will allow members of the public to sell their unwanted or unused wares (hope it doesn’t rain). From what the article stated Whittlesey town mayor and the rest of the Whittlesey town council believe that such an auction will bring the Market Square alive, and people that use the auction will also use the local shops and restaurants creating endless possibilities. I say “wake up” for as long as I care to remember Whittlesey has had four charity shops that do this day in day out. Does Whittlesey town council really have a clue on how to regenerate this town. I am certainly not apposed to anything that would add value but an auction is certainly not going to be our saving grace. Whittlesey needs financial investment and has done for a long time. The town suffers from a town council that simply does what they like, wasting the tax payers money, example relocating to a new office that costs over 10,000 a year to rent, they simply fail to listen or understand what the people of the town truly need. Currently a vast percentage of the town’s shops are empty and the general appearance of the town centre is worn and uninviting, maybe the town council and Fenland Council can spend their time and our money looking at ways to fulfil those empty shops, with new vibrant businesses rather than looking at ways to prevent new hope for the already existent shops that are struggling to stay afloat.
