An unnamed police officer penned a moving tribute to those who helped treat victims of a mini bus crash in which one person died and 19 others were injured.

The article was written on the force's Facebook page the day after a Mercedes minibus and a Volkswagen Golf collided on the B1040.

"The tragic incident along Somersham road makes for a very harrowing read," the officer wrote.

"It was even more so listening to my colleague, who was one of many outstanding officers who attended this. A big hug and a well done were never more vital than now."

The officer wrote: "It left me feeling extremely proud of her, listening to how she assisted and reassured those who were in need of medical attention and were understandably feeling emotional worrying about their loved ones, in what must have been a surreal and visually disturbing scene.

"My colleague told me of an elderly gentleman she helped; bandaged his head, wrapped him up warm with foil blankets, coats, anything she could find to make his position just that bit more bearable.

"She told me of members of the public that stopped to offer their coats to those who needed warmth."

The officer continued: "An off duty doctor stopped to assist with the many casualties, which offered that much needed assistance to all three emergency services.

"How in awe she was watching these services 'pulling' together to reduce the risk of life for those sadly trapped.

"The incident was declared critical and was dedicated its own police channel in the control room.

"Staff were remarkable; the constant stream of information being provided and for them to write this up comprehensively and to delegate officers to where they are needed is no easy task."

In conclusion the officer wrote: "Incidents such as these never leave you. You are left sorrowful for those who sadly lose their lives and you are bereft for those loved ones whose lives will never be the same again.

"We are so very proud to be of assistance when you need us.

"We are the persons who will be there to comfort you and give reassurance to you and your loved ones.

"I am very proud of my colleagues and of the public who have demonstrated kindness."
