HI-TECH speed cameras could be installed at a cost of nearly £300,000 alongside the Forty Foot Drain between Chatteris and Ramsey, following a major campaign by the Cambs Times.
It followed five deaths in as many weeks on the busy riverside road out of Fenland.
Cambridgeshire County Council officers are recommending further work be carried out into the feasibility of putting average speed cameras along the 7.5km stretch of road.
They calculate the average speed of a motorist along the measured stretch.
Investigations by road safety engineers found that speed played a major role in most of the accidents along the road.
Statistics showed that many accidents, where a vehicle ends up in the drain, were due to motorists overtaking or losing control.
Checks showed that about 82 per cent of drivers were travelling over the speed limit.
