Coates is set to have a new asset of community value as Fenland District Council plan to give a community nomination the green light.

The Carpenters Arms pub was nominated by Peterborough CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) to be registered under the council’s asset list for the next five years.

CAMRA is able to nominate the public house because it is a ‘community interest group with a local connection’.

Among their reasons for nominating the pub, CAMRA state that “the pub has special value to local heritage and culture which should be protected” and “social interaction encourages community cohesion and a collective sense of well-being”.

They also state that “new research from Oxford University shows that people who have a ‘local’ pub are happier, more satisfied with their life and a wider network of friends”.

An ACV is land in a local authority that is considered to have community value on the basis that it furthers the social well-being or social interests of the local community.

The nomination for the pub, which is located in the Benwick, Coates and Eastrea ward, became effective from June 18 2016.

The Carpenters Arms refused to comment at this time.

Fenland District Council is required to make a decision by August 18 – eight weeks after receiving the initial nomination.
