A STRINGENT raft of conditions has been put on the premises licence for a Wisbech pub, after the landlord had been accused of turning a blind eye to drug dealing and criminal activity.

The police and representatives of the Market Inn - also known as the Globe - made representations to the licensing committee of Fenland District Council on Monday, and after a successful mediation session, the premises licence for the Market Place pub was modified.

A police recommendation for landlord Phillip Deller to be removed was withdrawn.

Extra requirements include CCTV to record the faces of people entering the premises, and a personal licence holder must be on duty in the bar during opening hours.

No glasses bottles or open plastic vessels will be allowed to leave the premises, and all staff will be trained to use the CCTV system.

The designated premises supervisor or other personal licence holder will be expected to attend PubWatch meetings, and staff will be trained to use the Challenge 25 Scheme, and in the prevention of selling to drunk persons.

There will also be a record of refusals and incidents maintained on the premise and produced to a police officer or authorised officer on request;

The police had asked the district council to review the premises licence, after alleging that rowdy customers had been congregating outside, urinating in doorways, taking glasses out on to the street, and posing a risk to public safety.

A report also claimed that clientele involved in drug supply and usage had frequented the pub, and clients had supplied alcohol to street drinkers.

Mr Deller had refuted the drugs claims and said it was difficult to stop customers going outside with glasses.
