The A14 toll is to be scrapped, according to today’s Financial Times, which says confirmation will come as early as Thursday.

The newspaper says today that the Government will now pick up the tab for the £1.5bn upgrade.

Chancellor George Osborne is expected to confirm the Government’s position in his autumn statement.

As recently as last week the prime minister David Cameron told MPs: “I believe that road tolls can play an important part in providing new road capacity, and it is important that we find ways to pay for road capacity, but I also understand the concerns about this individual case.”
