ORGANIST Tom Weedon has been presented with an engraved medallion in honour of his 57 years service to Chatteris Parish Church.

In a ceremony attended by family and friends at Swan House in Chatteris, Mr Weedon was presented with a commemorative certificate of long service along with the medallion by Rev James Thomson of Chatteris on behalf of the Diocese of Ely.

Written messages of congratulations were read out from choral composer John Rutter and Lindsay Gray, the Director of the Royal School of Church Music.

The certificate was originally awarded by the Bishop of Huntingdon at a service in Ely cathedral which Mr Weedon was unable to attend. At that service more than 50 Ely Diocesan musicians were rewarded for their long service.

Mr Weedon was a boy chorister at Durham Cathedral and began his tenure as organist at Chatteris temporarily in 1952 when the previous organist went on holiday. Unfortunately, the organist died while on holiday and Mr Weedon continued at the post until his retirement last year.
