Chatteris firm Metalcraft appeals to local people to identify unnamed woman in 1917 photograph

Chatteris manufacturer Stainless Metalcraft is appealing to local people to help identify an unnamed woman in a photograph of its 1917 women’s football team.

Though there are eleven women in the photograph, only ten of their names have been recorded, with only the surname ‘Clark’ assigned to the woman who is pictured second from the right on the bottom row.

Metalcraft released the 100-year-old image from its archive to celebrate Women in Engineering Day, which takes place on Friday.

The eleven women who made up the ladies’ football team were employed as armament workers.

Metalcraft has invited anyone who might know the identity of the unnamed woman to contact them.

Today, Metalcraft employs women on its shop floor, as well as in office and support roles.

Austen Adams, managing director of Stainless Metalcraft and Avingtrans PLC’s Energy and Medical division, said: “Metalcraft values the role of women in engineering and we hope to encourage more women to join our ranks and pursue careers in engineering in the future.

“From shop floor workers, to managers and engineering buyers – there are roles to suit everyone and we welcome enquiries from anyone who may be interested in finding out more.

“We fully support women’s career progressions and professional development and I’m sure that in the future Metalcraft will see even more women in engineering roles.”

Samantha Roffe, who joined Metalcraft last year as a project buyer, said: “I’m so glad I went into the engineering sector.

“My role as a project buyer offers something different every day and I love being involved in the various contracts. It would be great to see more women working in engineering and I hope that in the future engineering workplaces will be less male dominated than they are today.”

Metalcraft currently has opportunities for apprentices and administrators.
