A Chatteris man is celebrating growing his biggest pumpkin yet.

John Richardson, who is a member of the Chatteris Allotments Association, said: “When it was growing in the summer it needed six to 10 gallons of water per day. Now it is fed 12 gallons, and four gallons of tomato feed.

“Some days it’s been putting on 15 pounds a night… we’ve got to get a forklift in to weigh it on a weighbridge. Myself and the other members of the allotment association can’t lift it up, we’re quite old boys now, plus it’s at the bottom of the garden.

“Two years ago I grew one which was 230 kilos, but I think this is going to be bigger. This one, which was grown using a special Mat Monsters seed, is massive to the club.

The Chatteris Allotments Association is going to hold a ‘guess the weight’ competition at Chatteris Parish Church on September 23 ahead of the annual pumpkin show, which will be held outside the church from 10am until 12noon.
