Students at a Chatteris school are campaigning for a zebra crossing after a crash and several near misses.
Members of Cromwell Community College’s school council met with the Mayor of Chatteris, Councillor Bill Haggata, to raise their concerns about the potential ‘risk of life’.
In a letter, they said: “We believe we may be the only secondary school in Cambridgeshire without a zebra crossing.
“We are very concerned about the risk to life posed by the absence of a safe crossing place for pupils at the front of our school.”
“Last year, a Cromwell pupil was struck by a car as he left the school site.
“The car was not going fast so the injuries the child sustained were not serious.
The letter - addressed to Cllr Haggata and MP Steve Barclay - added: “As pupils cross the road on their approach to school in the morning and again as we cross the road at the end of the school day, there is a high risk of being hit by a car.
“Likewise, when we return from trips in the evenings, it is difficult to cross safely to meet our waiting parents.”
Opposite the school’s bus bay is a footpath which leads to the recreation ground and children have reported “near misses” as they cross the road to go to or from the ground.
