CHATTERIS Town Band helped a former member celebrate his 80th birthday in style on Sunday as they took part in the Bandstand Marathon.

Donald Russell, who played for the town band from 1947-1953, celebrated turning 80 by watching the performance, which even included a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ in his honour.

It was the first time Chatteris had taken part in the music marathon, which is part of the Cultural Olympiad and sees more than 100 venues across the country celebrate their bandstands.

Mr Russell, who had not realised the band would be performing, said the concert had made his birthday “extra special”.

He said: “I was born and bred in the town with my twin brother Maurice who sadly died a few years ago. I was secretary of Chatteris Town Band for a time and my niece and nephew were also members.”

The people of Chatteris were treated to classic pieces such as ‘Colonel Bogey’, ‘Fantasia on British Sea Songs’ and ‘Clog Dance’, all played under the direction of conductor Bob Betts.

March Brass 2000, who performed at the same time in the bandstand at West End Park, in March, played a set including classical pieces, popular music and film themes, under the direction of Nigel Sutterby.
