A child cyclist narrowly escaped serious injury today after pulling out without looking in front of a police sergeant heading into work and collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction.

Sergeant Lee Levens of the Fenland neighbourhood policing team was on his way to March Police Station at 2.30pm and was in Dartford Road, March, ready to start his shift.

A police spokesman said a young person on a cycle crossed the road in front of him.

“The cyclist didn’t look both ways and collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction.” he said.

“If he had gone across the road a split second sooner he would have been hit by the front of the car and not the side.”

The spokesman added: “Luckily the young person didn’t sustain any injuries.

“Please reinforce to your children the dangers of cycling on the roads and the attention that a road must be given in order to keep safe.

“Cycle helmets are essential pieces of kit to keep your child safe. We all want the same thing, for our children to return home safe at the end of the day.”
