Arsonists torched a children’s playground in an attack that has been called heartbreaking for local children.
A large wooden climbing frame at The Spinney adventure playground in Wisbech was set on fire in the early hours of Monday.
Councillor Virginia Bucknor said: “Children will be heartbroken. It makes no sense to ruin young people’s fun.
“The park has been growing with extra pieces added on, making it a really lively and interesting place for children to play and have fun.
“Luckily it is only one area that has been ruined. We hope to get it rebuilt and ready for children to use again as soon as we can.”
Two months ago a boat that was built into the park was over turned and had to be re-secured in another mindless tack, she said.
The burnt climbing frame was about three years old.
A meeting is being held when the play worker and management team will look at how to repair the damage and also discuss park security.
Fire crew were called to the Waterless Road park at 5.03am and used hose reels to extinguish the fire. They returned to station by 6am.
The cause of the fire is being investigated using images from a nearby CCTV camera.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire County Council said a team, including an insurance assessor, were visiting the park today (Wednesday 30) to inspect the damage and ensure the site was cordoned off and secure.
“The section that was burnt was built by staff and children so we are hoping we can cut off the damaged part so that it can be rebuilt by them,” the spokesman said.
