More than 80 people attended a Golden Age event for older people on Thursday.
At the event, which was held at Coates Village Hall, 33 electric blankets were exchanged for free new ones and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service received 20 requests for fire safety advice or home visits.
Fenland District Council’s New Vision Fitness stand took 15 body fat measurements and five blood pressure readings and issued 15 one-day passes to the council’s leisure centres.
Age UK Cambridgeshire picked up 16 referrals for home energy assessments and the Fenland Ferret assessed 10 people’s benefit entitlements.
Other organisations taking part included the Care Network’s Community Navigators scheme, the New Queen Street Surgery and Jenner Health Centre in Whittlesey and the local Silver Lining Club.
MP Steve Barclay, who attended the event, said: “It was a real pleasure to attend the Golden Age Fair. It was even more fitting to do so when immediately afterwards I was able to go to Wisbech Boathouse to celebrate the naming of the Mac Cotterell MBE suite.
“Mac was the architect of the award-winning Golden Age Fairs and therefore it was a great pleasure to be able to join Mac’s widow Madge, Cllr Alan Melton and so many of Mac’s former friends and colleagues to celebrate the great contribution he made to Fenland over so many years.
“The Golden Age Fairs provide an invaluable service in helping older residents, from accessing items such as smoke alarms and electric blankets through to reviewing whether they are claiming the benefits to which they are entitled.”
At the event, he tried his hand at New Age Kurling, a form of the original curling game which has been adapted so it can
be played indoors on any smooth, flat surface, such as a sports hall.
Mr Barclay added: “I found it strangely addictive - I think I could get to enjoy it too much.”
The next Golden Age Fair will be on May 14 in Gorefield Village hall from 10am-1pm.
