A WISBECH student who has won a 1,500 bursary to study at university has encouraged other Fenlanders to “strive for more” to achieve their personal ambitions.

Rebecca Kierman said she was “determined to learn and make something of myself” after studying a National Diploma in Childcare at the College of West Anglia in Wisbech.

As a result her success, the 18-year-old has now been given a bursary by the Helena Kennedy Foundation to study for a degree in Education Studies at Anglia Ruskin University.

She was picked from hundreds of nominations nationwide for the 1,500 grant, which will help her pursue her dream of becoming a primary school teacher.

She was nominated by her CWA tutor Carol Renard, who described her as a “hard working, determined student who exhibits a mature attitude with the ability to succeed in circumstances where others would have given up”.

“I was shocked when I found out I had been selected,” Rebecca said.

“Studying for a degree can be financially draining so the bursary is going to be a big help.

“I feel really lucky to have been selected and would urge others who are struggling to find the necessary funds to approach the foundation.”

Rebecca says she will use the money to help her pay from some of the living and travel costs associated with her course.

She added: “I would definitely advise people to strive for more.

“Find out what you’re interested in and learn about it because it could lead to a better life.”
