IT is obvious Vodafone is unfamiliar with the ways and means of the Fenman. They are about to discover our cussedness, doggedness, and, where appropriate, sheer bloody mindness faced with something we don't like.Which is why we predict a doleful time for the company as it tries to persuade Fenland planners to allow mobile phone masts in Wisbech and Whittlesey. In Wisbech and Whittlesey the opposition is gathering apace rapidly as residents rally to halt the installation of these new masts. Now whether you believe these to be classic cases of nimbysm (not in my back yard) or not, the truth is many people have strong feelings that, apart from anything else, mobile phone masts provide an unspecified health risk.In its mind-numbingly detailed submissions, Vodafone reminds Fenland planners that it is "the Government's firm view that the planning system is not the place for determining health safeguards". And it adds: "It remains central Government responsibility to decide what measures are necessary to protect public health."Be that as it may we feel confident that not only residents signing up to petitions but also one or two, if not very many, councillors will interpret that statement as being too brash and too dogmatic to go unchallenged. Let the Fenman's capacity for infinite procrastination commence in earnest.
