AS the co-ordinator of a community car scheme I feel that the information that you have received in a previous letter (January 18) is inaccurate.
The community car scheme is run by volunteers who give up their time to help their community.
All schemes are assisted by the Care UK Network and Cambridgeshire County Council. The only payment the driver receives from Cambridgeshire County Council is a minimal top-up for their fuel.
The aim of the scheme is to provide door to door transport for all those who find using public transport difficult.
All community car schemes supply a team of voluntary drivers who give up their time for free because they want to help the community. They get no financial gain, but they do get a great deal of pleasure by being able to help members of their community lead a normal life and not be isolated in their own homes.
It is the passenger’s choice to use which ever means of transport they so require.
Most of our users have a variety of health and mobility problems and have often commented to me how they find “taxis too expensive and the fact that they spend so much time driving around on the Fact bus before they get home”.
The service we provide has become invaluable to many of our scheme users. The comments we receive daily are “you are our lifeline”, “what would we do without you”.
Is it so wrong that a team of dedicated community car scheme drivers want to help their community?
