The pond has been cleared and 120 different types of flowers have been planted, together with hedging, shrubs and other plants.

A new “kissing gate” and fencing has also been installed as well as bird boxes and bat boxes and a big sign has been erected giving details of all the wildlife to look out for.

Bob Ollier, chairman of Anglia in Bloom, said: “This is an unique natural area with a wide variety of wildlife that will provide a lasting legacy for the village community to enjoy”.

“An area that was disused and overgrown has been converted into one that promotes nature and wildlife and is there to be enjoyed by the whole community.

“The various colours of the flowers will be enjoyed over the different months of the year as they mature and grow.”

Parson Drove Street Pride, Fenland District Council, AmeyCespa, the Wildlife Trust, Cambridgeshire County Council and Community Payback all played an integral role in the six-year project.

Funding included grants of £6,500 from AmeyCespa’s environmental fund, £1,500 from the Wildlife Trust and £500 from FDC.

Other essential tasks were carried out by local contractors Shaun Bowles and Gary Fisher.

Mr Ollier singled out members of the Parson Drove Street Pride group for special praise.

He added: “They give up their spare time willingly throughout the year to provide enhancements to the village that make such a difference.

“Their role will be to continue to monitor the pond area and plan annual events to provide a lasting legacy for the village community.”

Councillor Gavin Booth, chairman of Parson Drove Street Pride, said: “It’s great that the pond has now been officially opened.

“The project represents years of work for the group, with much effort provided by volunteers, contractors and partner organisations.

“We have already received a number of positive comments from people on how the area has been improved so that you can actually see into the pond and observe the diverse wildlife. We will maintain it to enhance that.

“We are already planning more events such as bulb planting and would welcome anyone who would like to get involved with us.”
