Europe can make a difference in the Fens, according to the Cambridgeshire Euro MP, who visited a local nature reserve to look at how to help conservation.

Euro MP Richard Howitt visited the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) centre at Ouse Washes near Chatteris, to discuss conservation efforts.

The Labour MEP spoke with staff and volunteers about EU environmental targets, where he said a recent report revealed there had been improvements, for example, in the water quality of Britain’s beaches – previously the worst in Europe.

Mr Howitt MEP said: “I’m delighted to again join forces with the RSPB to stand up for conservation and a cleaner natural environment.

“I’ve previously helped attract EU funding for RSPB conservation projects and have pushed for tough environmental regulation in Europe.

“Areas like this stunning site at Ouse Washes are vitally important for our ecosystem, and I will continue to fight for our environment and our wildlife in Europe over the next 5 years.”

The RSPB, together with European charity Birdlife Europe, present Mr Howitt with their “EU manifesto” for preserving natural habitats until 2019, during the next session of the European Parliament.
