Cooking up a storm at Wisbech Grammar

A feast of festive fare was cooked up in the final of the first ever Great Wisbech Grammar School Bake-Off.
In a series of elimination rounds the 45 starters, including pupils and staff, were whittled down to eight for the final, the Christmas Show Stopper, after the cooks had showcased their skills with tempting scones, biscuits and short crust pastry.
In the final, staged at Octavia View, the home of the Ferry Project, competitors had to decorate something for Christmas.
Mouth-watering treats ranged from croquembouche and gingerbread houses to a wreath made from choux pastry.
Year ten pupil Christopher Green, 15, the only male in the final, was the winner with his gingerbread house.

His prize was a cookery book and a mug printed.
Runner up was teacher Kate Taylor who conjured up a tower of profiteroles.

The judging panel was made up from representatives of the teaching staff, Rotary Wisbech and Octavia View.
Organizer Alison Sloan, head of food and nutrition at the school, said: “It was a fantastic evening, with supporters enjoying the seasonal refreshments and the bakers producing really high standard products.”
