A NEW pub could be created in Chatteris with news that plans have been submitted to turn The Sportsman sports and social club in Fairway into a public house.Harnek Atwal, of London Road Stores, who is currently running the club, has applied to the district council for permission for convert the premises into a pub.His parents, Mick and Sarnjit Atwal, who bought the club last year, declined to comment on the plans.Mick Atwal said: "I will only go public when a decision has been made."The couple bought the club from a syndicate comprising members of the Housden and Birch families.The Sportsman had been owned by the two families since 1992 and was managed by John Birch, the longest serving landlord in Fenland, until his death in May 2004, aged 71.Mr Birch previously ran The Cock pub with his wife Doreen, but The Cock has now been converted into a children's home.
