A consultation on proposals to create a safer way for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the busy A10 north of Cambridge has been launched today by Cambridgeshire County Council.
The improvements follow on from the new £240,000 dual use path built earlier this year between the villages of Milton and Landbeach. The council is asking for feedback on two crossing designs. The first involves closing the slip lane to Milton, narrowing the Cambridge bound carriageway and creating a two stage crossing across the A10.
The second option is to widen the existing triangular island in the middle of the A10 to create three crossing points
Both designs include extending the dual footpath and cycleway to the sewage station and Landbeach Road.
Cambridgeshire County Councillor for Waterbeach, Maurice Leeke, said: ““It has been really encouraging to see so many cyclists and pedestrians using the new path.
“But crossing the A10 can be very difficult. The County Council has come up with two different proposals to make this easier and safer. This is the chance for local people to have their say on the plans.”
Cambridgeshire County Councillor Ian Bates, Cabinet Member for Growth and Planning, said “The new path has already encouraged more people to walk or cycle, especially commuters to the Cambridge Research Park and to the Science Park and Cambridge.
“I hope as many people as possible come and have a look at what we’re planning for making crossing the A10 safer, we’re very keen to hear their views.”
Two events are taking place, when plans will be on display and the designers available to discuss them:
* 23 September, 4-8pm, Milton Community Centre
* 3 October, 4-8pm, Landbeach Village Hall
The proposals are likely to cost around £130,000 and will be financed from developer funding.
