COUNCIL leader Alan Melton sprung a surprise this week by announcing two appointments that could help tackle derelict buildings in Wisbech.

He’s brought Councillor Simon King into his Cabinet and tasked him with conservation, derelict buildings and renaissance issues.

“Simon’s a hard hitter and I am delighted with this appointment,” said Cllr Melton.

He’s also brought back Councillor Jan French to a senior role as vice chairman of overview and scrutiny committee.

But she’s been given additional responsibilities “processes around dilapidated buildings” and for March affairs.

There was disappointment though for Wisbech councillor Phil Hatton, relieved of the chairmanship of planning. His replacement is Councillor Alex Miscandlon.

Cllr Melton said Cllr Hatton had been offered promotion within the council but declined it.
