AN elderly couple should have heating in their March home today (Friday) - but there was some worry it might not happen.
Hugh Lee, 80 and his terminally ill wife Doris, of Russell Avenue, had waited four months to have a new central heating system installed, and contacted the Cambs Times when they were facing a freezing Christmas without any central heating.
In August, they were given a £2,700 grant under the Government's Warm Front scheme, which aims to help towards the cost of brand new heating systems, and were told heating would be installed within two months.
Once the Cambs Times stepped in, bosses at the scheme said the couple's home will be heated by the end of this week and sent cash to buy temporary heaters to see them through the festive period.
But Mr and Mrs Lee received no written confirmation to say the work was going ahead until the Cambs Times contacted the Warm Front scheme again. The couple were then contacted on Wednesday to say workers would be going into their home yesterday to start installing the system.
Mrs Lee, 76, said: "We are still hoping the workers will come. It has been so cold, and we're looking forward to having a bit of heat in the place.
"But I do think it's wrong that we weren't contacted to say the work was definitely taking place in writing."
A Warm Front Spokesman said: "The installers have contacted the couple to tell them they are booked to come in.
"The reason no letter was sent out was because of the Christmas post, and we would have contacted Mr and Mrs Lee the day before the work was due to take place.
