Two years after throwing a Christmas cracker a whopping 13.57 metres Elliott Hurrell of Whittlesey returned to a worldwide competition to be crowned junior champion.

The ten-year-old took part in the World Christmas Cracker Throwing Championship in Devon and though he couldn’t match his record throw, he was still one of the only competitors to throw over 10 metres with his 11.7m effort.

Thanks to a lot of practicing in his garden in Windmill Street Elliot recorded not only the best throw in the boys’ category but the longest distance thrown overall - despite unpredictable and very windy weather.

226 competitors from all ages tried all manner of techniques to hurl their cracker as far as possible down the high street with many prizes being handed out.

Elliot’s dad Ady Hurrell said: “Elliott becomes really competitive and loves nothing more than beating his father.

“Just like pulling a cracker, the secret to success is in the technique and not power as any cunning child will tell you.”
