Crash car hits house

A ROAD safety campaigner has called on traffic chiefs to sort out calming measures along a Chatteris road after a car was in collision with a cyclist and then crashed into his house.

Rob Thomas, of Huntingdon Road, who was involved in a petition to have the yellow lines removed along the street, believes the accident may not have happened if the yellow lines were not there, or if other traffic calming measures had been put in place.

The front window of his house was damaged after a Peugot 205 collided with a cyclist outside Salem Court at about 2.10pm on Thursday, December 22.

Mr Thomas said: "This is the second time in two years the front of the house has been hit in an accident along here. That day it was a typical Fen road, muddy and wet. Really lousy weather.

"The outside wall to the front room was damaged. There are a few loose bricks now, but I can't believe the window pane didn't fall out. I was at home at the time, but not in the front room."

The cyclist, a 67-year-old man who has not been been named, was not hurt and police are investigating the accident.

The yellow lines petition, in which more than 50 people signed up to say they wanted the yellow lines in the road removed, was sent to Chatteris Town Council and Cambridgeshire County Council and work was given the go-ahead about three months ago.

Mr Thomas added: "Removing the yellow lines would mean more cars would park along the road, slowing the traffic down.

"The accident could have been fatal, and there have been others along here. There needs to be some form of speed enforcement along this stretch."

A county council spokesman said: "We would like to have had the double yellow lines removed much sooner, but due to problems we have changed contractors.

"The job should be done in the next couple of weeks, and we hope that then the road will be much safer.
