Archant

About 20 tonnes of straw went up in flames during a blaze at a Benwick farm last night.

At 8.07pm, a crew from Ramsey was called to a fire in the open at a farm in Whittlesey Road.

About 20 tonnes of waste straw was well alight in close proximity to standing crops, other straw and a stubble field.

Firefighters used hose reels, drags and worked with the farmer to use machinery to prevent the fire from spreading and to extinguish it.

Positive pressure ventilations fans were also used to accelerate the burn.

The crew returned to station by 10.40pm.

The cause of the fire was accidental.
