THEY may not be playing on the hallowed turf of Wembley, but cup final fever is gripping a team of under-10 girls who are preparing to play the game of their lives this weekend.

A coach load of supporters will be spurring on the youngsters as they play at Cambridge City’s ground on Saturday morning, against their rivals from Milton Colts.

Manager Scott Rimmer said: “They have already won the league, and I fully expect them to do the double, and win the Under-10s League Cup. They are a great bunch of girls, they are unbeaten this season, having won 15 league matches and drawn one. They have also got through two preliminary rounds of the cup to get to the final, it has been an amazing season.”

The team of girls - pupils from Glebelands and Kingfield schools in Chatteris, as well as Mepal and Witcham School - have scored 84 goals through the season, and conceded just nine.

This is the second year the team have battled it out in their league. Scott explained: “Last year they were under-9s, but because there was no league available for them, they played a year above themselves, and were runners up in the under-10s league.

“I am so very proud of them. We have a squad of 13, and they train every Monday night at The Paddocks. They have shown great determination and commitment throughout the season.”

The team play six-a-side, and rules allow substitutes to be rolled on and off throughout their 20 minute each way match.

Scott, whose daughter Chloe is in the squad, formed the team three years ago. “The first year we just trained, and the second year we felt they were strong enough to play in the league, and they were only beaten once,” added Scott.

“I had never been a manager before, but Chloe wanted to play, and I wanted to make sure she had the opportunity, so it made sense for me to set up the team.

“This year the team has gone through the whole season unbeaten, but they are not complacent, they work hard and train hard. I would like to encourage anyone to come along to watch the match at the Milton Road ground on Saturday at 10.45am.”
