ONCE upon a time, a long time ago, ‘silly people’ put up signs outside schools that said “20 mph”. They patted themselves on their backs, good job, well done! Gradually, as the ‘clever people’ realised that at weekends and in school holidays these signs were actually a nonsense, they started to put up signs that said “20 mph when the lights are flashing”. Finally everyone could see that the ‘clever people’ should really have put up the signs in the first place. Unfortunately, the ‘silly people’ also put up the signs at the March bridges, saying “Cyclists dismount”. All the ‘silly people’ once again patted themselves on their backs, good job, well done!. Now we just have to wait for the ‘clever people’ to change the signs to say “Cyclists dismount when pedestrians are on the bridge”. Until then, I suppose it’s more back-slapping! Oh well.....
