AN 18-year-old girl's life is in ruins after she got into the back seat of a car driven by Craig Stark.

Sadie McGahey is partially paralysed, needs round-the-clock attention, and can communicate only by putting up her thumbs for 'yes' and down for 'no'.

A week ago a barrister told a crown court judge that last April's accident had a "profound effect" on Stark, at the time one-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit for driving.

Jailing him for four months, Judge Paul Downes, said: "You have a complete disregard for the laws of the roads and you still have no driving licence.

"You can reflect for the rest of your life that this woman will never have a normal life again."

The court heard that Stark had clocked up 14 convictions for 28 motoring offences in recent years.

On Tuesday he was in the dock again, this time before Fenland magistrates to admit driving while disqualified and without insurance last November for which he was given a concurrent three-month jail sentence.

In the past year Stark, 23, has been in court on several occasions, including for robbery and possessing a knife. He has given different addresses, including Gaul Road, March, Station Road, Manea, and Westbourne Road, Chatteris.

The full extent of the crash on the B1100 March-Wisbech road which crippled Sadie McGahey was told at Norwich Crown Court by Greg Perrins, prosecuting.

He said the left side of Sadie's body was injured, her cheekbone broken in three places, and she needed plastic surgery. She has no memory of the accident and is now in a wheelchair because of permanent nerve damage.

Mr Perrins said Stark was driving his Peugeot 405 after a boozy night out when he lost control. He had 117mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, 1.5 times over the legal limit. He was charged with dangerous driving and drink-driving.

Traces of cocaine and cannabis were also found in his system. He also had no MoT or insurance.

Stark admitted driving with excess alcohol, without due care and attention and without insurance.
