FORMER boxing champion Dave 'Boy' Green from Chatteris presented a Skills For Life award to Paul Peeling, from Wisbech, who achieved both a national award in literacy and numeracy to GCSE level and a special achievement award.

He also presented another Skills For Life Award to Sadie Harrison, from Chatteris, who achieved a national award in literacy and numeracy to GCSE level.

Both presentations took place at the National Probation Service (Cambridgeshire Area) awards ceremony at Hinchingbrooke House, Huntingdon.

John Hughes, chief probation officer for Cambridgeshire, said: "All those receiving awards tonight had to work hard to achieve their qualification, but they have also taken a major step on the road away from crime and towards getting a decent job within the local community."

The Skills for Life Programme run by the National Probation Service (Cambridgeshire Area) provides access to education and training in the community to allow offenders to gain the skills and qualifications they need to get jobs and play a positive role within their communities. The courses cater for all levels of ability.

Cambridgeshire Probation Area staff work closely with their partners to deliver a range of courses from GCSE and NVQ qualifications to special courses for offenders who are dyslexic or those for whom English is not their first language. Specialist courses include maintaining your tenancy, an eight-week programme for offenders with housing needs, which includes money management and independent living sections.
