Minions, Mario, Minecraft characters, Angry Birds, Maleficent and Lara Croft took over Doddington on Saturday as the village held its annual carnival and sports day.

A dozen colourful floats full of children and adults dressed up as video game characters covered Church Lane ahead of the village parade.

Fenland District Councillor David Connor judged Lionel Walden School Association’s Lego float as the junior winner whilst Lionel Walden School were runners up with their version of Wii Sports Resort.

The senior winners were the Ladies That Lunch with their Angry Birds float. The runners up were Doddington Football Club with Minecraft Doddington. The visitor award went to Karate Club.

After announcing the winners, Cllr Connor said: “Fantastic effort all round, well done everyone for taking part.” Other floats included Future Stars Youth Theatre, who brought Sonic the Hedgehog to life whilst Fenland Shotokan Karate Club opted for a Karate Kid float.

Dance and Twirl, dressed in neon pink, then performed their energetic cheer and pom routine.

The vicars of Doddington, Reverends Ian and Lynda Brady, were on hand to give out the best costume prizes for each age group.

The winners were Strike (under sevens), Charlotte Self as the Horse Rider (over sevens) and Tara Fiveash as Bowser (adults). Sue Laver, dressed as Maleficent, was awarded the runner-up adults prize.

Soon after, and following the prince Ethan Harrison and princess Evie Shepherd cutting the ribbon, the parade got underway, led by the revving engines of Harley Davidson bikers at the front.

With children shooting out water from their guns and throwing sweets to the cheering crowd that’s stretched through the village, there was a real community atmosphere.

Live music came from Bondy and Whiskey Twist before the action moved to Doddington Recreation Field for the sports afternoon.

Dozens of races, bouncy castles, charity stalls and more filled the field as the sun shined down until the late afternoon.

But the fun didn’t stop there, as The Three Tuns pub hosted a DJ and BBQ throughout the evening, ensuring the party continued.
