Only a handful turned out for an anti-Trump protest in Wisbech but our video of the event has already had 60,000 views on social media and attracted nearly 800 comments.

Whilst most comments claimed it a waste of time and effort, organisers believe differently and claim a potential audience of a million in America for the Wisbech protest.

Organiser Sue Dockett, secretary of the Wisbech, March & District Trades Union Council, said: “When I went into my e-mails that evening I opened an e-mail from my late husband’s cousin in Los Angeles who had discovered the video on the internet when looking for information about protests in the UK.

“She had proudly circulated it to her friends in California who, like her, oppose what Trump espouses and they have sent their gratitude to all involved in the demonstration through her.”

Ms Dockett said: “I have since been told, though cannot confirm, that over one million Americans have discovered this video.

“Certainly what is true is that many Americans now know about Wisbech, a small English town they had never heard of, where its citizens came out onto the streets to protest at the hatred and bigotry Trump’s presidency has unleashed on their country.”

She said: “When we called the protest we couldn’t have imagined the impact it would have let alone reach people in the US. It is also perhaps the law of unintended consequence that the presence of Trump supporters at the demonstration has increased the power of our protest.

“Americans of good will have been heartened by the solidarity we have shown with their struggle for decency and democracy.”

As the protestors made their way through Wisbech from the Clarkson Memorial – holding ‘Peace’ and ‘Build Bridges Not Walls’ flags walking towards the police station – the group met some objectors who supported Trump’s policies.

One objector said: “Donald Trump has done a lot better than our Government. He does what he says he will do. These people think that just because the Government says that he is bad, then he is bad.

“But he is over here to do business; he’s not the English Prime Minister.”

Ms Dockett added: “We’re against the hatred and bigotry that Trump has been spouting across America, and he’s trying to bring here to Britain as well.

“He’s supported by a whole range of far right and white supremacist crews that have got access to the White House.

“We don’t want that. We’re not a country of hatred and violence; if you go back 50 years in America, we thought the country was going back.

“We don’t want that division and hate here. We want our country to be united.”
