A statement posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page says that it is “with great sadness that the Plate and Porter ceased trading on November 18.

“Thank you to everyone that supported us over the 20 years; we are left with some fantastic memories.”

David Morris, assistant coroner for Cambridgeshire, opened the inquest into Mr Carroll’s death on November 26.

In a short statement the coroner’s officer reported that “the cause of death is provisionally given as hanging; subject to confirmation at the resumed hearing on April 20, 2016.”

Next to the railway station in Station Road, the restaurant has been a popular eating out spot for many years.

That popularity was reflected in the stream of messages of support and condolence posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

“We are very sorry to hear your news, we enjoyed it every time we visited and thoughts are with your whole family,” wrote one customer.

Others wrote of the “many happy nights we spent there” “the lovely evenings” at the restaurant and “the fabulous meals” enjoyed there.

One of the most poignant tributes came from a former employee who wrote of having spent “eight wonderful years working at the Plate and Porter where I learnt so much about restaurant life.

“I never felt I was going to work, just helping my great friends. Will never forget those times and all the lovely meals we had. Love to you all.”

Another recalled “some very special times at the Plate and Porter and none so special as our wedding 18 years ago. We were always made welcome. Sending you much love.”

One other former employee posted: “So sorry to hear the devastating news.

“I have known you all for 20 years and I have some of the best years of my life at the Plate and Porter.

“For the three years that I worked there it was by far the best job that I have ever had as I always enjoyed going to work!

“Sending our love and thoughts to you all at this sad time.”
