TWENTY-one-year-old drink driver David Theobald ran off after embedding his car into the bay window of a house in March just two days before Christmas.

The collision was so intense that the airbag of his car was activated -- and Theobald was found by police in a phone box in the town centre, ringing his mother.

His breath test reading was more than double the legal limit, and on Wednesday Theobald was banned from driving for 20 months.

Theobald, of Church Road, Christchurch, admitted drink driving and failing to stop after the accident in Station Road, March, on December 23.

"What had started as a very good day turned into a disastrous day," solicitor Anita Waterman told Fenland magistrates.

Theobald had been out for the day in Peterborough with friends. They had been bowling, had a meal out, and had been drinking.

During the day one of his friends had made derogatory remarks about his father, and at the end of the day Theobald ran away from March railway station, and came across his car parked in the street.

"He is of a nervous disposition since being mugged a year ago," explained Mrs Waterman. "He felt intimidated; the other men were older than him."

Theobald drove his Peugeot 306 into the window at 140 Station Road, and found himself surrounded by people shouting and swearing, she said.

"People were very angry, and he got out of the car and ran off until he got to the town centre.

"He is deeply ashamed and profoundly upset," she added.

Theobald was fined a total of £250 with £60 costs.
