POLICE found banned driver Lee Joseph hiding in his loft after he was caught behind the wheel during a traffic census, magistrates were told.

On Tuesday, Joseph appeared in court and admitted his seventh offence of driving while disqualified and without insurance.

In 1993, Joseph was banned for dangerous driving and told he could not drive until he took an extended re-test.

But he took only an ordinary driving test, and thought he was free to drive at the end of a subsequent three-year ban imposed in January 2004, solicitor Roger Glazebrook told Fenland magistrates.

He said Joseph, 35, of Corn Mill, March, had not been hiding from police when he was found in the loft, but had been moving some boxes up there.

"He thought he was no longer disqualified and had done everything right," he said.

Joseph will be sentenced on October 30.
