Crews tackle two cars alight at Mepal, another at Cottenham and extinguish machinery ablaze at Waterbeach

Fire crews were called out twice in East Cambridgeshire on Sunday – to a collision at Mepal and to a car fire in Wilburton.

The first incident at Mepal happened at 12.30pm and a crew from Chatteris was sent to the scene.

The A142 was blocked for sometime as fire crews and the emergency services dealt with two vehicles that were ablaze following a collision.

A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters arrived to find two vehicles on fire following a road traffic collision.

“All persons were out of their vehicles on arrival. Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used two hose reels to extinguish the fire, before returning to their station by 1pm.”

The cause of the fire was accidental.

On Sunday at 3.45pm, one crew from Cottenham was called to a car fire on Station Road, Wilburton.

On Monday (October 15) at 6.25am, one crew from Cambridge and one crew from Cottenham were called to a machinery fire at the industrial estate on Ely Road, Waterbeach.

Wearing breathing apparatus firefighters used one hose reel to extinguish the fire, before returning to their station by 8.14am.

The cause of the fire was accidental.
