FENLAND District Council's CCTV cameras in the four Fenland towns have certainly proved their worth in recent months, recording more than 300 incidents which led to 33 arrests.
The 55 CCTV cameras placed strategically around the district play a major role in helping to dispel the fear of crime, as well as catching people in the act of committing criminal or anti-social acts.
Between March and May the CCTV operators picked up on 225 incidents in Wisbech, 55 in March, 16 in Chatteris and 20 in Whittlesey. These led to 22 arrests in Wisbech, eight in March, two in Chatteris and one in Whittlesey.
The majority of incidents, about 30 per cent, were due to disorder and nuisance and are often associated with alcohol.
Councillor Fred Yeulett, portfolio holder for prevention, intervention and enforcement, said: "The CCTV cameras have played a vital role in not only tackling crime, but reducing the fear of crime. This is something that local people tell us they really appreciate.
