FIRE crews rescued an elderly couple trapped when their car plunged into water filled ditch this afternoon.

Cambs Fire Service said two crews were called to Twentypiece Road in Cottenham after the couple’s car had left the road and went into ditch containing about four feet of water.

A spokesman said: “The couple were uninjured, but were unable to get out of the vehicle.

“Firefighters wearing dry suits entered the water and used a short extension ladder to reach the couple and bring them up the bank of the dyke to safety.

“The couple were checked over by paramedics at the scene.”
