Heroes across Ely are being recognised for their kindness and dedication as nominations are now in full swing.

People across the city are being put forward in one of the ten categories for their unsung hardwork – some with multiple nominations.

So far entries have been received in all of the categories and readers can now support the initiative by sending in theirs via our printed coupon.

Organised by drain care and repair specialists Metro Rod Cambridge - in partnership with The Ely Standard - it is the second year running that gongs will be given out to those who go the extra mile.

There are 10 categories in which individuals can nominate their special ‘hero’ who lives or works in Ely and the surrounding villages, within a 10-mile radius.

They include the Colleague of the Year award, Caring Companion, Most Amazing Professional and Neighbour of the Year.

Naomi Sherwood, business development manager at Metro Rod, said: “Already there have been a lot of people with multiple nominations which really shows how incredible they are.

“All categories have received nominations which is great news. We have some wonderfully exciting nominations for The Ely Hero category which will be the highlight at the ceremony.”

An example of the type of entries received so far include this one for a special neighbour.

The nominator writes: “Always there to help someone else, no matter what time it is or when it is.

“Always offers to look after other people even when she looks after not her children tirelessly. Always at the end of the phone and will do whatever she can to help with problems or put a smile on your face.”

As a special thank you to all of the nominators too, a fortnightly competition is also being run to win a pair of Cineworld Ely Cinema tickets, generously donated by the cinema themselves.

There are many local businesses who support the initiative too, including the Business Category Sponsors Grovemere Property, Elyi Magazine, Life Fitness, Thorlabs, Crown Garage Honda, Ely Gin Ltd, Xpert Resourcing and Kings School.
