ELY man Michael Garner was jailed for 10 years this week, after admitting charges of rape and other sexual offences.

Garner, 67, of New Barns Avenue, pleaded guilty to three charges of rape that date back between 1988 and 1991, two charges of indecent assault on a female from 2002-03, and one charge of sexual activity with a child in 2004.

He was sentenced by Judge Jonathan Haworth at Cambridge Crown Court on Tuesday, and was ordered to serve an extended period of five years on licence following his release.

Garner had pleaded not guilty to three more charges dating from 2006-07, allegations of sexual assault, causing or inciting a female child to engage in sexual activity, and the sexual assault of a female child. The judge ordered the allegations to be left on file.

Garner was sentenced to 10 years jail on each of the rape offences, and three years jail on the other three sex offences, all to run concurrent.
