What makes a winner? We sent our photographer along to Ellgia Recycling to capture what a successful company looks like. Ellgia so impressed judges at our recent Ely Standard Business Awards, managing director Steve Crook was on stage FOUR times to collect awards. Ely-based recycling company Ellgia topped off a hugely successful year by scooping four awards at the 2015 Ely Standard business awards.

Based on the Lancaster Way Business Park, Ellgia Recycling provides what they term “bespoke commercial waste and recycling services” to businesses across the east of England.

The company, headed by managing director Steve Crook, began its recycling journey in Cambridge in June 2011.

Since then, Ellgia has doubled in size - and turnover - and now has sites in Boston and Scunthorpe as it aims to maximise recycling potential across the region.

The company follows a ‘waste hierarchy’ in an attempt to ensure businesses have a long sustainable solution to maximise recycling, reducing costs and reliance on landfill.

Ellgia’s 125-strong workforce provide services such as wheeled containers, compactors and food recycling, and their mission to encourage businesses to recycle has seen them become one of the leading waste management services in the east of England, which was reflected in their sterling performance at the 2015 Ely Standard Business Awards.

Ellgia scooped an impressive four gongs and was praised by our judges.

They said Ellgia Recycling demonstrated “excellent examples of customer service training, control systems and strategies to ensure future improvement which provides total customer satisfaction.”

The company won medium business of the year, customer service award and business of the year.

And Steve Crook, who was hailed as an “exceptional entrepreneur”, was named business person of the Year to cap a wonderful year for the company.

Mr Crook spoke of his delight after his company’s four-award-haul.

“We’re extremely proud to have scooped four awards for our devotion and vision for waste management,” he said.

“This is the first time we have entered these awards and we’re absolutely over the moon to celebrate with the crème de la crème of the business community in Ely.”

The recycling firm has also ventured into the sporting world by signing a shirt sponsorship deal with Ely Crusaders FC.

Joe Rudd, sales director at Ellgia Recycling, was especially pleased to see the tie-up as he used to play for the Crusaders.

He said: “I live in Ely and in my youth I played for Ely Crusaders FC, so this sponsorship means a lot to me personally.

“When the opportunity arose it was an easy decision to give our support to the club as we appreciate the important role that the club and Ellgia Recycling play in the local community.”
