THE family of crash victim Jamie Butcher is holding a jumble sale to raise money for a charity which campaigns for tougher sentences for dangerous drivers.

Jamie was knocked down and killed on a pelican crossing in Churchill Road, Wisbech, in February last year.

Michael Moore, of Murrow Lane, Parson Drove, was doing almost twice the speed limit and had run a red light when he hit the 22-year-old. He admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for 43 months in April this year.

Jamie’s mother Tina, sister Hollie and stepfather Steve Green wore RoadPeace badges throughout the court case, to show their support for the charity.

RoadPeace supports those who have been bereaved or injured in crashes and has campaigned for tougher punishments for dangerous drivers.

Following April’s court case, stepfather Mr Green vowed to “do some work to increase the sentences handed out in these cases”.

He said: “There is something wrong when you pinch a pair of Reeboks during a riot and you get a similar sentence for a dangerous driver who has killed somebody.”

Jamie’s family will hold the fund-raising jumble sale on Saturday at Onyx Court sheltered housing scheme in Wisbech, from 10am-4pm. Books, DVDs and home-made cards will be on sale and there will also be a tombola.

Mr Green said: “RoadPeace is a charity that helps victims of the sort of thing we have been through.

“I had never heard of them until this case but they support people and they campaign for tougher sentencing. The work they do is very important.

“It’s something we would like to keep supporting in future but this is new to us. We have never held anything like this before.”
